All About Self Tanning Spray

By Haywood Hunter

Self tanning spray can be a safe and effective way to get a healthy looking glow. Since it has been proven that excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer, a self tanning spray is a good alternative to tanning. These products were first introduced in the sixties; however, they have improved considerably since then.

At first, self tanning products produced an orange glow that appeared fake. Overusing self tanning spray can still cause this to occur, but not if it is used according to the directions. Used properly, a beautiful tan can be created, without the risk of exposure to harmful UV rays found in sunlight.

DHA is the active ingredient in self tanning spray or lotion. It comes from a colorless sugar known as glycerin. On the top layer of everyone's skin is a layer of dead skin cells, and the DHA reacts with this layer and causes it to change color. However, the effect only lasts about a week as the dead skin cells slough off naturally or by exfoliation, so the tan must be maintained. Apply more self tanning spray as indicated by the directions in order to maintain the look.

A self tanning spray is one of the most effective ways to apply a sunless tanning product. Lotions can be hard to spread evenly on the skin. However, a self tanning spray allows for equal distribution of the product, helping to keep the tan from looking spotty or patchy.

To get the most even look possible, exfoliation should take place before applying a self tanning spray, either with a scrub or a loofah. Care should be taken not to get the product on sensitive areas, such as lips or eyes. Also, apply the self tanning spray sparingly to elbows and knees, these usually have more dead cells and will appear darker if a light touch is not used.

Even though self tanning spray gives the appearance of a tan, it does not offer any protection from the sun and harmful UV rays. A good sunscreen should still be used when exposure to the sun will occur. Self tanning spray will give the user the peace of mind from knowing they are not risking cancerous exposure, while still getting a great look that lasts for days.
