Reasons Behind A Suntan Lotion Review

By Haywood Hunter

Americans spend over $600 million a year on suntan lotion. There are literally hundreds of products on the market to choose. Choosing a product that is right for you and your family may be one of the trickiest decisions you make all summer. With the heightened attention to living, a healthier life choosing good protection is important so do a through suntan lotion review before you purchase.

For years, the makers of suntan lotion labeled their products with terms such as "waterproof" and "all-day" without any regulations. Until recently, these claims did not even have to be proven. However, recently the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) implemented standers for all suntan lotion companies that require them to have more stringent labeling procedures. Because of these laws, they can no longer make unsubstantiated claims. All products must have the UVA and UVB protection amounts they can no longer just put the UVB label.

There are numerous choices the consumer has for sun protection it is just a matter of preference. Customers can choose lotion, spray, cream, ointments, or gels to apply before going into the sun. There are separate products available specifically for the lips, eyes, and nose. Just check the SPF to see how much protection these products give.

The sun-protection factor or SPF is reported in numbers. SPF tells consumers the amount of protection a sunscreen provides. The numbers can range anywhere from 5 to 100 but do not think an SPF of 15 allows you to stay in the sun 15 hours longer then normal that will vary from person to person and it also depends on the type and amount of sun exposure.

One of the main problems with sunscreen protection is that consumers often do not apply enough. If an adequate amount of the product is not applies it greatly reduces the effectiveness of sun protection. When applying sunscreen a minimum of five to six teaspoons must be put on. It is better to put too much then not enough. Always rub on the first time 30 minutes before sun exposure.

Sunscreen can offer protection from UVA rays, UVB rays or both. A broad-spectrum sunscreen, which offers protection from both rays, is suggested for most people. However, baby's less than 6 months old cannot use sunscreen because the chemicals used to protect from the sun may harm their skin. Always pick one that offers the highest possible SPF.

As we choose a healthier lifestyle, one of the main products we can purchase is suntan lotion. Remember to do your research and choose a product that is going to offer you the most protection possible from the harmful sun's rays. To limit the amount of damage the sun does to your skin use sunscreen every day.
