How to Ask the Right Questions to a Web Design Professional

By Kelley Rogan

Searching for the right web design for your company's website--regardless if you're a Fortune 500 business or not, a profit-oriented or non-profit institution--can take up a lot of time. Imagine going through thousands, if not hundreds, of design companies... so it pays to know what to look for in a web design company that will be best suited for your business.

Let us help you make an informed decision with the following points:

1. What kind of web experience do they have?

Know how long they've been in the business. Longevity is a factor to consider because it shows that they really know their stuff.

2. Portfolio.

The best part of that long experience is the array of websites they've designed for their clients. Ask for links to other sites they've created and see for yourself. Are you blown away by what you see? Do the sites showcase different styles that appeal to you?

3. Ask for references.

They should be able to give you lots of references just so you can get feedback from previous clients they've worked for. This way, you'll know if they can get the work done on time and within the given budget.

4. They're asking price.

The most important step in pricing is to make sure the potential design company outline all of the prices associated with the work and puts it all in writing. Never enter into a deal unless all of the costs are well understood up front.

5. Experience in search engine optimization.

Most web designers do not know SEO. For this reason you may end up with a nice website that is not search engine friendly. If this happens you may need to do another website and pay extra for SEO.

6. How long will it take?

Be sure that you get a good timeline and they adhere to it strictly. You might ask for guarantees as well.

7. Type of support they provide once web site is launched.

Web site maintenance is usually offered by the design firm. If they don't, maybe you should look for another that offers it. This "post-launch" maintenance is usually part of the services a reputable design company has to offer if their clients do not have their own webmaster.

Do your homework when choosing a web design firm. Websites can be expensive so you want to make a good choice the first time around.
