Is SEO A Game Or Can It Really Help You?

By Brent Peterson

It took me quite a while to really wrap my head around what SEO was and how important it really is. While I knew some things, it is true that a little knowledge can be dangerous, wouldn't you say? Not fully delving into search engine optimization and educating myself wasted me a lot of time and a lot of money over the years. I never thought that it could make much difference and I thought that I knew everything that I needed to know but I knew so little that I didn't even know what I didn't know!

Everyone knows that SEO is a way to get search engines to find your website. This stuff has been around for as long as there have been search engines and the rules that they use to decide what a website is about and how important that site is when it comes to any chosen topic that you can think of.

Think of your website as a cardboard box just like all the other cardboard boxes out there on the internet. Sure, your box is special to you. You would know it anywhere because you created it. You could find your website because you know where it is. The general public is walking around without the knowledge that your website even exists though. SEO is the sign on the outside of the box telling what's inside as well as signs on the internet telling people and search engines about your website.

There are actually two ways to tell the world what your website is about. We can write on the outside of the box, in essence, and let search engines know what's inside. This is called on site or on page SEO. The things that we can do is name your website correctly and use tags to inform search engines what the topic of your website is. In addition, we try to make sure that words associated with the topic of your site are included in the content often enough that it sends a signal to search engines about the theme of your site.

There are a ton of ways to optimize your website and once upon a time there were people that would try to game the search engines by using different tricks and methods. Of course, times change and in an effort to keep people from acting in less than ethical ways, the search engines are constantly changing the rules. In order to be really effective as on site or on page SEO there has to be a good balance between useful content for readers as well as using some of the triggers that search engines use to gauge which site has more authority on any given topic.

Now, if on page SEO tells search engines what your site is about by acting as signs on your site, then there should be a way to help your site also by having factors external to your website that tell the world where your site is an what it's about. These are off page SEO methods and they include article marketing, social bookmarking and general back-linking campaigns. These are basically signs pointing back to your site that tell search engines where you are and what your website is about also.

These methods have also come under scrutiny over the past several years as people try to push the envelope and game the system. Some do it more effectively than others and sometimes by overdoing it, damage can actually be done to an otherwise very good website. It would be like renting a billboard saying "free pizza" and then not have any pizza for anyone that shows up. People become angry and you wind up with a pretty bad reputation.

While many of these methods are still used today, it is a very clever SEO company that knows how to make your website as natural looking as possible while still letting the world know what you're all about. Things like natural link building and content freshness can play a big role as well as LSI keywords. As times change and people try harder to game the system, it becomes even more important to have someone that knows what they're doing on your side when it comes to on page and off page SEO.
