By Yuan Lai

This digital age we are living in regards the Internet as the main source of all information. That's why it's not only important but necessary to have a good web design to go with your website. It will either make or break the business you're running online.

In this article, I'm going to let you in on a quick and easy guide about web design. I'll be discussing the common elements of a good web design, the trends surrounding it for the year 2012 as well as some tips to go with it.

The first thing I'm going to talk about is the elements of web design. One is unity: the sense of integration among all the other components of your website. Whether you want the images, text and headlines closely knit together of far from each other, there should still be oneness in placing each of them.

Balance is another element of web design that considers how well the site's components appear. It depends on the intent of the website whether everything will appear symmetrical, asymmetrical or discordant. Just make sure your choice reflects on what your website is all about.

The third element is contrast. When it comes to creating variety and highlighting important components in your website, using contrasting colors, textures and font styles should never overpower your visitor.

Almost like contrast, emphasis is another element that's mandatory for web design. This will make it a lot easier for your visitors to know which components are most important and most needed by them. Make sure not to overdo it.

Rhythm is the fifth and final element of web design. This determines how all the components of your website play out with each other. This can greatly aid you in keeping a consistent style and vibe to your site. Ensure that the navigation tools, images and backgrounds of your site are strategically repeated.

Now let's talk about the trends of 2012 web design so far. Mobile device friendliness is the first. We all know how dependent majority of people worldwide are on their mobile phones. So whether one's using an android or a smart phone, you should have your website ready.

The next trend is an interactive interface. Your site components should respond well to the hover or a click of the mouse. Include drop down boxes and fly out menus to take it up a notch.

The third trend of web design this year is font style. Sure Helvetica and Arial are two font styles that still serve their purpose well but customizing text is becoming more popular and useful. It does two things to a site: personalizes it and makes it easy for visitors to remember you.

Whether it's in the form of pop-ups, scroll and loading bars or sign up forms, minimalism is one of the most famous and latest trends. What it gives website is a great sense of professionalism, cleanliness and good aesthetics so don't pass on this one.

The fifth trend is social media integration. Information in your website can easily be shared and talked about if you have the Like Button, Tweet and Pin It options. It doesn't matter if these icons appear small in your site. They are more powerful than you can imagine.

It's no surprise that web design is a very useful online tool to making businesses work. So if you want to remain significant online, you may want to keep yourself updated.
