Saving Elderly Lives With Walk In Tubs

By Marcus Coleman

Most of us take the regular bathtub as being the most "normal" thing on the planet. We never give the act of using it too much thought. This is also why so many people underestimate the danger inherent in it. To elderly people there are no underestimations going. The frail, the disabled and the elderly know too well how risky bathing and showering is. They certainly don't look forward to it. For them, using a regular bathtub is risky prospect every time.

If you think about it, the regular bathtub involves jumping over a tall obstacle to then land in a very tight and constricted space. Then you're expected to use both hands for the showering process and there is nothing to support you, lean against or use for support. Again, to those of us who are more able or younger, this is not an issue.

The scenario I described is quite scary to the elderly person or those with disabilities. For this reason many people have come up with clever solutions. One such solution is the bathtub lift. It's a special lift that puts people in and out of the tub in an automated fashion. It's one popular solution out there.

The cheapest and most popular option however seem to be the "grab on bars". These allow people to get in and out of the tub by grabbing onto to these bars. While inside the tub they can also hold onto to these bars for additional safety and support while showering.

A third option is getting so called bathtub stools which allow people to sit down in the tub and to shower while seated. However, most people prefer getting a walk in tub, because it combines all three into one. It offers all the safety and security features you want in one single all-in-one solution. These don't come cheap, but most people say walk in tubs are well worth the investment.
