Recommendations You Can Use When Designing Your Site

By Kent Isakson

There is a multitude of things that a website can be used for. It can be used as an information hub, a social network for communication, or a simple entertainment portal. No matter what its use, all websites require a knowledgeable webmaster so they can be designed properly. Here are a few web design tips to help you create your own website for any purpose.

Task based usability tests are a great way to determine how effective the design of your website is. In general, the purpose of the tasks is to locate some information or functionality that is buried in your website. If your website is well designed, the user should have no difficulty completing the task. On the other hand, if it is not, the task can give you some insight as to which areas of your website could use improvement.

Do not use images for your background. When you think about some of the biggest websites on the Internet, they do not have images as backgrounds. When you use image backgrounds, you represent yourself as someone who is not well-versed in web designing. Images as backgrounds also cause your site to load slower, which can lead to user frustration.

Keep your education ongoing. Websites are constantly changing, every day, and if you stop learning new things, you may find yourself falling behind the pack with your designs. Try to convince yourself to learn one new thing each day, be it programming a new background, or a simple HTML setup.

Pages of a website are very important for even the smallest sites, so make sure that you really have an eye for detail. You need to make sure that the latest page you have added to your site has the same dimensions and features of your previous pages. The last thing you want is a hodgepodge of different styles and themes on one site.

One thing that every web designer should understand is that it is never a good idea to store unencrypted passwords from the sites users. Saving passwords as simple text documents is a recipe for disaster so make sure that any passwords you plan on storing are encrypted so as to avoid and future problems.

If you're designing a website, make sure the code you write has a valid HTML+CSS. Although most browsers can make sense of code that isn't valid, it could be rendered correctly or incorrectly. Valid code will render the same way most of the time in modern browsers. You can check the validity of your HTML code with an HTML validator.

Attractive

To help make your website more attractive, incorporate some pictures that you took. Having pictures on your website gives off a more user-friendly approach to your site. When people see pictures they tend to spend more time looking at your site and cannot wait to click on the next picture.

Get feedback on your web design. A web designer is only one person, and what you might find attractive or useful, might be considered by others to be irrelevant and hard to navigate. If possible, get some members of your target market to test your site and give you feedback on what they like and what they don't.

You want to ensure that your site is attractive, and simple in terms of usage. If your site is ugly or confusing, visitors will just turn around and leave. If you have a lot of complicated content on your website, also add summaries for visitors who just want to know the basics.

Because of the coding involved with site design, there is a misconception that designing is very difficult. As you can tell from these tips, though, there's really nothing to it. Just follow and apply the information as you read it and you should have no trouble at all designing a site that will impress anyone.
