Get Yourself A Web Design Freelancer

By Ben Becker

While there are many ways to get a freelancer, not all of the are optimal or even effective at all. There is just one strategy that is optimal as well. To me, the most optimal thing you can do is to use the power of your social network, both your real life one, and the internet one. Posting a message on Facebook is very simple, yet effective. Just post a shout out and say "Does anyone by any chance have good freelancers to recommend for my web design needs?". You can also go ahead and use up your offline network and have a chat with friends, relatives and acquaintances. Ask people if they can recommend someone good.

Even though this is the best method, it isn't available to everyone. Not all people have a large enough circle to pull this off. And it's not that everyone has helpful friends who give good advice or recommendations. Whatever the reason you have for not using up the social network, you will need to go to alternative sources of advice and recommendation, and I'm here to explain how those work as well.

The best alternative strategy is to use online reviews. These are a good subsititue for word of mouth. They are not perfect and they have tons of flaws though. For example you can't ask the reviewer follow up questions like you can ask your friend in real life. With that said, online reviews are still pretty good as a way of finding out what potential professionals to hire in a given field. This is also true when it comes to freelance web designers as well.

The other major problem with these reviews is that sometimes there are simply not enough of them. In some circumstances, for one reason or another, you may looking into a field where for your city, there are no more than 1-2 reviews per designer. This is no where near enough to help you decide whom to hire. To use a reviews system effectively you will need a situation where each of these designers has dozens up doznes of reviews each.

And finally, realize that you don't have to hire a freelancer. Sometimes there won't be good ones in your city. In that case you might hire a "web design company" that's in a completely different state or even continent.
