Choosing A Freelancer To Do Your Web Design

By Ben Becker

There are many criteria to use when you want to hire a good freelancer. One of the best advantages to working with a soloist is that you will get more personal attention. With that being said, if this freelancer is on another continent, what's the point? You will get more time to chat to them on messenger? This is not what you want.

Seeing that one of the best advantages to freelancers is their personal and individualized attention, I think it's best to shoot for people who are local. You don't want to talk to people who are in another state; no matter how attractive their pricing and web design looks. You generally want to make use of people who live and operate physically near to where you work.

You generally want to make it a point to use word of mouth and networking to find these people. Be sure to ask around and ask everyone you know for recommendations. Ask if they have good experiences with any designers and if they can recommend anyone to you. Ask for tips, advice and warnings as well.

The most important thing here will be to avoid laziness. Do not be lazy, and please go ahead and talk to everyone you can. It doesn't matter if they're a close friend or if you don't expect them to have interest in design. Ask everyone you know if they "happen to have experience with freelance designers" and do this until you get a series of yes answers and very enthusiastic recommendations.

With all of this said, I am not implying you have to go the freelancer route. Sometimes there will be no freelancers in the area where you live. In that case you have lost out on the main benefit to hiring a freelancer - the local personalized help. If you can't find a local one, then go hire a web agency, whichever you like, their location is unimportant.
