Common Internet Marketing Mistakes

By John Michaels

Traditional marketing practices such as direct mail, telemarketing, and mass media often require users to put in more time, effort, and money especially if they're aiming for a wider audience or when attempting to go global. Good thing, there is internet marketing. This is the general term applied for web-based practices aiming to promote the business' website online to get more traffic and subsequently, improve sales.

Internet marketing pertains to a group of web-based practices aimed at promoting one's business online. In this age where almost everyone has access to the internet, online presence is deemed to be important for any business, whether a startup or a big corporation. These strategies include SEO/SEM (Search Engine Optimization/Search Engine Marketing), article marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, and PPC (Pay-Per-Click). While these practices are among the known strategies and are proven to be effective, not all who engage in them succeeded because of committing one or two of the following factors:

1. Poor content

In internet especially in search engine optimization (SEO), content is considered as the king. Relevant and carefully made content can drive traffic while poorly made ones will certainly drive visitors away. Thus, make sure that before you hit that 'publish' button, you have proofread your articles for the presence of grammatical errors, misspelled words, and even for typos.

2. Spamming

When you send unsolicited emails to your clients and prospects, you are spamming. In many states in US, there's a law that could charge you for spamming. Thus, always make sure that all your contacts in your mailing list have opted in and be sure to add the opt-out option in your campaigns.

3. Using boring subject line

If you're into email marketing, one way to get your mail drown among the sea of emails your client receives per day is to use utterly dull and common subject line. Use interesting subject lines that would entice your subscribers to open your mail and read it.

4. Giving false promises

If you don't think your products or services will be able to achieve a certain set of desired results, then please avoid claiming that they can. Whether it's online or offline marketing, there's nothing more worse than false advertising.

5. Providing broken links

Leaving broken links unchecked will leave many of your clients and prospects frustrated. Before you publish your article or send your campaign, make sure the links work well.
