6 Steps To Perfecting Your Email Pitch

By John Dorian

Going straight over the plate are your media pitches. With a little forethought, and a few tips, you can throw fewer balls and more media relations strikes.

The soul of wit would be brevity. Shakespeare could have been giving media relations tips when he penned this gem several hundred years ago. If getting to the point in your subject line is what you can't do in 10 words or less, then you need to work on your message. Aside from keeping the subject line short and to the point, you should also include the time frame if it is essential to the pitch. For instance, "Entrepreneurs Storming NC General Assembly Tuesday"

Alas! If you have a startling or interesting fact, use it as a hook. For example, you are developing a story idea about local home prices. Your initial thought for a subject line is: "Average Lake Norman Home Listing Price Spikes To $413,000." However, it's possible that a more catchy subject is "Interest Rates Hit Six Month Low" and "No Credit Score, No Problem."

Try to Humor Me. Not everyone can benefit from humor. If you know the reporter has a sense of humor or appreciates quirky items, then that is the only time that you can use it. For example, you recieve an email pitch that gets your attentiona! The subject line reads, "Teach Your Dog To Meditate", now that is a funny yet catchy line! Some may open it and some may not.

Avoid Getting Too Attached. Word documents or photo files should never be attached to an email pitch. Once more, in case you did not catch that, you should not send attachments. Wait until they ask for additional information to get past email filters and to avoid hacking off your media contacts before sending photos and documents. If ever you make them mad, then your next pitch may also be deleted before it is even read.

Being Cool. You may be too excited to fire off that media pitch you have just written. It's better if you don't. First, you should let it cool off a bit. Before you send the pitch to the media, particularly if you are trying to use humor or be quirky, you should ask input from others. After all, you wouldn't want your pitch to fall flat.

Being Relevant. An important thing you should do is make sure that the emails that you are sending out are sent with a purpose and message. As long as you can meet these two criteria, then you are going to be successful when you are marketing your business etc.

Better wind up and begin pitching.
