What is SEO?

By Edward Miller

A search on any search engine for a popular keyword displays thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of results. In this situation, the methods which allow a company to be displayed in the first few results for a query using a particular word is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. The reason for the increasing popularity of SEO in last few years is that the presence of the website in top search results aids in attracting more visitors to it, which very often converts into more business.

Black hat and white hat are the two primary classifications of SEO techniques. The tools used in black hat SEO for ensuring a place for the website in the top results are not seen as fair practices. However, white hat SEO only applies those techniques which are largely accepted and do not violate the principles of the search engines.

The search engines previously matched a webpage with the search for a particular word by using Meta data, which is usually included in the code of a webpage. But, nowadays, a huge proportion of search engines have employed complicated algorithms which evaluate over two hundred distinct factors to rank search results.

SEO experts try to figure out the significance of several components in the search algorithms and stay in touch with the latest advancements that are brought about by different search engines. This information helps them improve upon the SEO techniques for their customers so that they stay competitive for selected keywords. Some time back, when the search engines relied upon Meta data and the text on the page, this process required optimizing Meta tags and ensuring a reasonable frequency with which a keyword appeared on the page.

Although these factors are still quite significant, search engines now give much more priority to the popularity of a web page. The number of links pointing to a web page indicates the popularity of that web page. Every single link is therefore seen as a vote for the page and the system becomes democratic in nature. Because of this, now SEO has to concentrate on offsite techniques too, like offering content for free to receive embedded links and establishing a presence on online hubs for social interaction, such as blogs, forums etc.

The most crucial factor to remember about SEO is that it is quite dynamic. The field is constantly changing and your strategies need to adapt to those changes. That is why it is so critical to have an expert SEO consultant by your side.
