The Illogic of Multiple Official Black Friday Sites

By Kyle Dolcind

If it so happens that you are American or otherwise care about shopping for the holidays in the U.S. then perhaps you have conducted an Internet search for the term Black Friday. Many people do you know. Mostly they search for that phrase during the first three weeks in November leading up to the American holiday of Thanksgiving when we celebrate the bounty we enjoy. And if you have made that search, then you have probably seen how there are more than one website that declares itself to be the official Black Friday site, many more actually.

What would your reaction be if you were to see, say, five of the ten websites listed as each being the 'official' Black Friday site? It would probably be the same as mine. You would probably say, "Hey now, what's going on?" Because you know that they all can't be the official site. Indeed, it would probably be the clue that there is no official web site for Black Friday.

And when you think about it, there's no surprise really why there are all these web sites who want to claim to be the official one. After all, they probably believe that if they put the word "official" in their web site title and description they will get more people to visit it. And they may be right. It probably surely has that effect when there is only one website on the list of ten search results that says it is the official one. And the reason they can get away with it is because nobody or no company owns the term Black Friday.

As much as a single company may wish they could own and trademark Black Friday, they simply cannot because it came about as a result of numerous consumer based stores that all happened to do something on the same day as a result of shopper behavior on a certain day after a holiday, namely the day after thanksgiving. It is really a rather interesting phenomenon if you stop to think about it.

In the end, I think you would agree that all these sites are fooling no one. It becomes clear they are simply jockeying for position and attempting to make themselves sound official. In fact, they are pretty much all alike once you look at all these "official" Black Friday sites. It would be smarter, I think, to come up with something that none of the others has so as to set yourself apart from the competition.
