Google acquired Zagat in 2011. For those of you who don't know what Zagat is, allow me to explain. Zagat is a rating system in which users can rate everything from restaurants to airlines. The ratings lie on a 30-point scale. People had to initially pay a fee to access the Zagat website. After Google made this acquisition, they made the decision to waive the fee and make it free for users. Users have the ability to read reviews about certain businesses and make an informed decision as to whether or not they will use that business.
Google recently announced that GooglePlaces will be eliminated. What was GooglePlaces will now be GooglePlus Local Pages and include the Zagat rating system. Users will still be able to search local businesses but now they have the ability to read in-depth reviews written by previous customers. Google hopes to make it a simple experience for their users whenever they need to use the internet.
In order to use this feature, you must have a Google account. GooglePlus Local Pages will allow the user to read reviews from family and friends who have left them on certain businesses.
