e-Mails Not Getting Answered?

By Allan Talbert

Let us face it -- none of us like to be dismissed. But sending an e-mail to a colleague that commits even Certainly one of these 4 cardinal sins can mean the difference in between a speedy reply ... and that large e-mail receptacle bin in the sky. :-/ Right here are four typical explanation why YOUR mail could be going "the method of the spam", and how to reverse them to get your messages answered -- and answered *fast*:

Are you able to hear me now? Durn! Can you hear me now? Frick! Are you able to hear me now? Cripes! Can you...?" Follow-up e-mails are okay, and quite necessary throughout these times of overzealous spam filtering. But for the adore of all issues great and holy ... please give your recipient a reasonable amount of time to answer the first message First! In the event you have not waited at least 24 hours -- particularly on a initial get in touch with -- you haven't waited lengthy enough. People do have to look after lives, and spouses, and hunger pangs, and bathing, and... (well okay, perhaps not these final two if we're inside a Genuine pinch ;)).

Please, God ... NO HTML! It still boggles my mind how many people ignore this rule. HTML mail comes to about *twice the size* of plain text mail with equal content. In case your recipient can set their mail to skip downloading messages more than a certain size, and that size is set low, your e-mail will probably be cut off in mid-message. This means the recipient then has to create an additional work to retrieve YOUR message from the server.

And individuals who send HTML mail appear to always choose a bright blue(??!) hyperlink-colored font that is WAY too tiny for the typical eye to read. Umm... WHY?! Just about something other than Courier New is GUARANTEED to be difficult to read in some e-mail programs -- and it is generally blind luck that your recipient will HAVE 1 of these with this issue.

And don't even get me started around the odd "glow" blue text has when plopped on the white background ... make sure you?

"NO, Mommy! I don't WANNA study an ezine!" It's inconsiderate to deliver ezine length e-mails to company people -- period. You're almost guaranteeing that the mail will not be fully study, or that you'll get a half-a**ed reply, since the reader didn't feel like wading via your verbosity to obtain to the goods.

"Ezine length" is generally about nine kilobytes (9k) and over. You are able to usually inform how big an e-mail is before sending by checking its dimension in your mail program's outbox. If not, for the reference, 9k is about 650 words. (Yeesh!) Unless the recipient is expecting a long reply from you, 3k (200 words) is a good stopping point for a initial contact. Be aware: Yes, this goes for personal e-mails as well. Being "friends" with somebody is not license to regularly disrespect their time with mammoth e-mails unless they send the same for you -- regularly. So, no saying the same factor eight killion different ways, or using "flowery" language and "pretty" psychological photos to get your point across. Just say it, say another thing and for Heaven's sake ... Maintain IT Moving.

Umm, seriously ... is it truly THAT important? Ugh. Do I really have to clarify this 1? Individuals who mark ALL of their messages High Priority remind me of the small dude who cried wolf, in the event you know what I mean. When I consistently see these from the same people all of the time, I begin ignoring the priority and answering them Final inside a mail check, just to spite 'em. Granted, not everyone is as crazy as me and can do this. But in the very least, you're nonetheless hurting your probabilities of obtaining a reply to *seriously* urgent messages rapidly, by abusing priority markers.

I could go on. I won't. (Yet.) I'll save the rest for "Part two." Till then, clean up your e-mail act in the event you have to, and watch much more of one's e-mails not only get answered, but get answered quicker -- and lots much more productively, too. Commit the above shameful offenses at your personal risk!
