Add New Stories To Your Blog As They Unfold

By Christy Lyons

Blogging about news stories the moment they take place has become the hottest ticket for bloggers. Due to the fact that blogged content can be easily updated, current news make their way to readers faster through blogs than news found on the television or newspapers. Compared to other media, the contents of which need to be approved by several editors, blog posts can be published and updated immediately, allowing the news to reach the reader very quickly. Certainly this can be good and bad at the same time.

One of the best known cases when blogs appeared before the news reported an event was in 2005, when London was struck by terrorism. The photos a man took from his cell phone as people were being evacuated from a subway car near an explosion, were first released online within an hour. Personal accounts were also blogged right after the photos were released, and people around the world were able to read and see pictures of the event thanks to material published by bloggers.

The fact that these stories and images were being spread directly by individuals operating without the added filter of a reporter helped to make the crisis feel very immediate to people across the globe. News that come through blogs are often personalized. This phenomenon could potentially reshape the way news are written and read, and it definitely sets a trend for "New Journalism."

A lot of cultural commentators and bloggers really enjoy being able to read and post news through blogs, as they feel that this is a much more democratic way of releasing information to the public. Since the traditional media no longer has exclusive control of delivering news, a lot more voices are added to debates revolving around current events. Some people, however, are completely opposed to the concept of delivering news through blogs. While TV and newspapers can only report news that are backed by facts, bloggers are not always required to do that, and journalistic accountability is not always enforced. This can unfortunately create a problem, as lies can be easily spread like wildfire.

Maybe you agree with the concept of news being delivered through blogs, or maybe you don't, but you probably still recognize that this new mean of spreading news has potential for tomorrow.
