How important is good web design to SEO?

By Brooke C. Stephenson

Some people might think that web design and SEO have nothing to do with each. This view may have been more prevalent in the past when sometimes all it took to get a good search ranking was to full pages with spam and keywords rather than quality content and buy links from dodgy directory sites. To some it may have seemed like web design had absolutely nothing to do with SEO.

Few would be so brash as to claim that such techniques could still be used in isolation as an effective SEO strategy. Before even thinking about the benefits to the user of better web design, it's been shown that things like site maps and internal linking can lead to better search results. With such fundamental parts of web design being integral to SEO, ignoring them is a bit like shooting yourself in the foot.

Those are the simple things to consider. When it comes to something more complex like implementing Flash the importance of web design is even more pronounced. If Flash isn't used correctly, crawlers may be unable to read your site content and it will end up dropping down the rankings.

But even when web design doesn't affect SEO directly it will still have an effect. This is because of how important links are to search rankings. While you might be able to swap links or pay for links, if you really want your SEO campaign to be effective you'll want people to voluntarily link to your site. They will only do this if your web design has helped create an enjoyable experience.

Focusing on web design is important generally, because without it any web user will have an awful experience. The human must be the designer's priority, but without also being concerned with SEO search engines won't be able to send visitors to the site in the first place.
