Minimalist Websites And Their Purpose And Method Features

By Tommy Eccles

The word minimalist can be simply defined as presenting no more than what is required. For example, if a home is appointed in this type of approach, it may only have very spare accessories for what is required for survival and not necessarily for luxurious comfort and convenience. Minimalist art, as another example, is clean and simple and not overly detailed. Although this approach may not appeal to everyone, there are distinct advantages for those who appreciate this style and perhaps for others who may not realize the disadvantage of clutter. Similarly, minimalist websites offer a clean and uncluttered presentation of information.

This type of website is considered to be clean and spare, offering only what is required, while still pleasing the eye. The purpose of this kind of site is to keep the surfer or shopper focused only on what the company or writer wants portrayed. Clean, simple design keeps the customer or user from being distracted while shopping or reading.

Conversely, busy, cluttered sites are full of sideline distractions. They lead the eye away from the main points, which can lead to the surfer going completely off into another website, perhaps never to return again. This type of site may start a chain reaction, leading the user further and further away from the intended focus.

An advantageous design is a simple and uncluttered one. Important aspects are not just highlighted; they just might be the only thing that can be found. Too much information can be just that: too much. Just the right information, given in a pleasant and spare design can keep the focus right where it needs to be.

Characteristics of a minimalist site can include simple backgrounds, grids, clear headers and uncomplicated features. They are easy to navigate and orderly, often in a black and white design or other pairings of complimentary colors. The home page is simple and often includes only two or three elements, inviting the reader in to learn and discover more. The simplicity is the invitation itself. No flashy or fussy headers are used.

Simple design holds the attention of the reader without the manipulation of distractions. When users are surfing a site, they appreciate the ability to easily accomplish what they have set out to do, instead of looking at gaudy attempts at grabbing their attention. Respecting the intelligence of the user is key. Most people can sense when they are being led down a path they did not want to go on to begin with.

Although it may seem like a clean site design is simple to do, in fact it takes a designer who is trained and knowledgeable about minimalism to get the job done the right way. Designers who focus on this approach are specialized and have the corresponding experience to back their work up.

Minimalist websites keep the focus on the most important aspects or the bare essentials without leaving the user unsatisfied. They are easy to read, simple to understand but with an understated sophistication that comes from a creative design approach. Conversely, loud and distracting websites with too many extra elements are very different from the clean and spare site designs.
