Keywords And Proper Keyword Placement - How Do They Help?

By Gene Fink

If you are trying to use SEO or search engine optimization techniques to improve your articles, you have to be wary of keyword density and placement. When your submitted article is spidered, this means it is scanned in such a way that it takes into consideration how and where your keywords are used, and if it is done properly, this could take your page to the top of the search engine charts.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a word that is going to be placed in your article several times, not just once as that would make every word a keyword. Search engine spiders work in such a way that if they see your keyword placed several times in the article, they would deem your page useful to people searching for that word, thus boosting its rankings.

Over Optimizing Your Articles

If you over-optimize your articles and insert your keywords all over the place, this is something you wish to avoid - it is commonly known as "keyword stuffing". When you stuff keywords in an article a spider will detect that you are trying to trick it into placing your article high in the search engine results for that word, and will instead penalize your site and your page for doing such. Furthermore, the penalty for stuffing more than just one page with keywords is especially heavy, as your entire site may be banned from a certain search engine, and your other pages adversely affected even if they are optimized properly.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is how many times your keyword is placed in your article. This is usually measured in terms of percentage rather than instances of a keyword. Let us say you have written a 500 word article and need to have a 5% keyword density - this means your article will need to have 25 instances of the keyword. Finding the appropriate keyword density that could help your articles generate some profit would lie in your hands, as it is easy to be overwhelmed and confused by the many resources available online that give different recommendations on keyword density from the other. Not all webmasters will succeed with a density suggested by the other, even if it has worked for him or her in the past. As long as you don't over optimize and you are making sufficient profit from your rankings, then you can choose whatever keyword density you like.

The Right Density

The hourglass technique involves placing your keywords mainly at the start and at the end of your article - this often leads to better search engine rankings. Having the right keyword density in your article makes it more likely that you will make money off of that article because it will rise in the search engine results and be seen by more people.
