Beginner's guide on keyword research: three quick hints

By Dr Jonathan Rosental

The global economy continues to accelerate along a downward spiral despite what PhD Economics Harvard Professors teach us. More and more full-time employees are in danger of losing their job. They turn their heads to various online money making opportunities.

These fraudulent online offers typically say something like "pay us just 49 dollars and earn up to 200 bucks per day for your online writing samples" or get 25 dollars per hour on Facebook publicly traded website. It does not take all the wisdom of the world to be very skeptical about an option that does not even test your prior skills.

Google AdSense is one of a few online affiliate programs that is not fraudulent. The internet mogul will pay you up to a few dollars for each click that outside visitors make on your website. After a few easy steps the AdSense account is set up and popular bloggers often turn AdSense in their main source of income.

The major problem that beginners face is is how to filter keyword search results and it all boils down to what keywords you promote through SEO campaign. Having reviewed a few most popular resources we identified the three common mistakes that beginners make when choosing keywords.

There is absolutely no need to purchase a pricey SEO tools from the web because there is an excellent free keyword tool in Google AdWords pane. However, what is often overlooked is what criteria are used to pick up keywords.

The first mistake is when customers pick too optimistic keyword. For niche websites in investments do not dream about getting with "technical analysis" keyword anywhere above page 20 of Google search. A recently established niche blog for such an obvious keyword will not get anywhere close to Google top 10. You can waste hundreds of dollars just to move from page 19 to page 17 in Google search and will not generate a single cent from the AdSense.

Online marketers who are about to start their first niche website often forget about targeting it on a specific service or product that will sell. Common sense tells us that the price (in our case CPC - cost per click) is determined by the interaction of the demand and supply.

Information is the only thing that AdSense is really selling and the CPC is determined by the number of sellers who want to sell a specific product. Basically, you can only profit from a popular product or service. Thus, even if you write about the fishing on Mississippi you need to have keywords related to bicycles or carry-on iceboxes and not squirrel.

Finally, beginners often pick up low income volume keywords. The total monthly income from AdSense campaign can be approximated by multiplying CPC by local monthly searches. Notice that typically you will get only a tiny share of this income. It is clear that a key phrase with CPC of a few cents or local monthly searches under a thousand will not substitute your regular job.
