Need For Application Lifecycle Management

By Dawn Bradford

The life of an application in the software field depends on so many factors that the term Application Lifecycle Management in itself is quite difficult to define in specific terms. Every vendor would have their own set of important aspects to be considered for the life of an application. There is however one common and accepted factor. That a process is essential that would monitor this life of the application. This is essential due to the fast changing scenario of both the business rules as well as the processes that govern a business.

The software in such cases becomes the business process and not something that is alien to it. In such a scenario the business house has to perforce learn the software that controls or runs their business. The way the software flows or rather work process flows in the software also has to be learnt by the business house.

It is essential for the success of the business house to be able to implement changes in its business rules to keep up with the times. With the business process being more software dependent, it goes without saying that the procedure should be flexible enough to accept such changes. Customers mind and their demands needs to be incorporated into the procedure and this must be done quickly if the business is to thrive.

It is not only the changes that the business house is able to implement, but also checks that are required to ensure better quality of product or service. Learning the nuances that form the flowchart of the software process, would enable the think tank in the business house to know where when and how the quality check steps can be included.

Data flow and limiting the data to specific people only, can then be controlled by the top hierarchy. Need to know basis is a rule that one has to remember. A good business house cannot allow its data to be known to all as this would give away its strategy to other competitors.

Reports are generated continuously in a business house which helps the people at the top to predict the future of the market or customers. Application Lifecycle Management would look into this aspect of the software that runs the business back end. It is with a correct prediction only that a business can ever survive in the current competitive market.
