Drive Traffic To Your New Or Small Business Website With 5 Easy To Understand Essential Search Engine Optimization Tips

By Carolyn Stevens

1. Keywords and Keyphrases. Choose words and phrases which are the most likely to be typed into the search engines if someone was looking for your product or service. Place your chosen keywords and keyphrases in the title and in your paragraphs to optimize any searches for these words. Don't go overboard though, or your text won't flow naturally.

2. Learn From Your Competition. By using popular keywords and keyphrases, you increase your competition. Enter your phrase into the search engine to see how the top ranking sites use the same phrase. Make your keyword phrase more specific and you'll drive traffic to your website. If someone is looking for pocket sized binoculars, this is the keyword phrase they would most likely type into the search engine. Although other sites selling binoculars are in competition with yours, by using a more descriptive keyword phrase, this ranks your page higher than those using the word "binoculars" alone.

3. Links. There are two types of link that you need to be aware of. Internal links are where the pages of your site link to each other, making your site easy to navigate. If this happens, Google recognises that your site is user friendly and, in turn, your site will rank higher. Backlinks are when a website links back to yours. When Google sees this, your site gains importance. Contact website owners of sites which complement your own and are relevant to your product or service and ask them if they will add a link to your website. If they agree, add a link on your site back to theirs.

4. Content. By adding original and interesting information regularly to your website, the search engines will recognise that you are working hard to keep your website fresh. If the search engines see you doing this, they will increase your ranking, which in turn drives traffic to your website.

5. Social Networks. You may already use these sites on a personal level, sharing gossip and photos with family and friends. Just think about how your family and friends then share their stuff (which links to your stuff) with their friends, who in turn share it with theirs. Huge isn't it? Adding a like button to your blog and webpages creates the same backlink to your website, which in turn improves your ranking, which in turn drives traffic. Huge isn't it?
