Deciding whether to build your own Small Business Website

By Marta Howells

Having someone design a small business website for you need not be costly, it will still hit your bottom-line cost but the idea is that your new website will bring in more sales and pay for itself. You might be thinking about building your own website but uncertain where to start. Take a look at the following considerations. Primarily, do you have the time needed to dedicate to putting a website together? and secondly, what do you want your website to do for you?

It is not impossible to build your own basic website for your business. That is not to say that web design is not a tremendously in depth subject requiring study and talent, but with a little study and application you can gain decent results at a basic level.

For you to be successful in building your own website you will need to be confident in your ability to pick up new things easily and good at working out the way to navigate new systems. Before you can begin, you will need to gain some knowledge of CSS, HTML and basic web design and layout. This list nevertheless is not exhaustive.

Lets go back to our initial question. Do you have the time to learn these skills?

Perhaps you have had enough of working for others and plan on developing your own business, so you are happy to put time into this project. Have a look online, where you will find a vast array of resources available to help you, purchase an up to date 'Build Your Own Website' book, take a look at some tutorial sites. There is plenty available, much of which will point you in the right direction.

Perhaps however your circumstances are different. Maybe you are already struggling to manage your current workload. If this is the case, creating your own business website is not going to be the best path for you as insufficient input is likely to result in a website that does not do your business any justice.

Next you need to ask yourself this second question. What is it that you would like your new website to accomplish for you? Whilst mulling about this it would be a worthwhile exercise to take a look at other websites for your direct competitors.

If you are a small business such as a plumber, a landscape gardener, an electrician, or anybody who wishes to set up a web presence so that people locally searching online for your type of services can find your contact details and give you a call then a very small site that appears in the search engine results may be enough for you. Creating this type of basic website would be totally manageable.

The type of business you are in may however be deemed a more professional category. In which case a small, basic site may not give your clients the right first impression of your business. Do a Google search for some search terms that you would like to have a website ranking for. What is the level of competition in your field? Take a look. Be realistic, if you feel the standard is higher than you are likely to be able to reach yourself, you would probably be better off hiring a professional web designer.

To conclude the above; If you are confident in your ability to produce a website of a high enough quality and feel you have enough time to commit to the job in hand, then give it a go. If you are not sure, then you should hire a professional. Something to note is that creating your website is just stage one, if no one can find it on Google then you have wasted your time. You need your website to be at the top of the search ranking in order for it to benefit you.

You are failing to achieve potential sales and clients if you have no web presence to advertise your small business. Creating a website for you business may not be too difficult to do alone but you first need to work out whether you have the time to learn how to do it and whether or not the results will bring you increased sales.
