Trade Show Booths That Get You More Business

By Adriana Noton

Look anywhere across North America and you will find a Trade Show to suit almost any industry. Bridal shows, home shows, boat shows, food shows and more are brimming with people who want to sell you their products and services. These can be a great way for vendors to gain massive exposure in just a few hours. A major part of whether it will be successful or not lies in the actual trade show booths. There are several things one should keep in mind while setting up, to ensure the best results possible.

Booth location is important, although it's not always possible to get the best spot. This is largely determined by the show organizers. Sometimes, if booked early enough, one can request a specific location. If you've never been to the venue before it can be difficult to know the layout, but most will give a map of the area. Being on the first floor is usually preferable or near areas where demonstrations or fashion shows will be taking place.

Pictures are worth a thousand words and as people walk by, they normally don't want to stop and read a lot of jargon or fine print. Don't fill your displays with stats or a lot of words; you will quickly lose their attention and they will move on to the next vendor. Use bright colors to entice and draw people in. If allowed, you can play music as well.

You can't go wrong with free samples; you'll have people flocking to you in no time. If you are in the food or drink business, offer them treats as they walk by. While they're enjoying their treat, you can engage in a conversation about your products and give them discount cards or coupons. The sample you hand out doesn't really have to be related to your business. For example, real estate agents can't very well give away free homes. In this case, you can approach a local business and ask them if you can give away samples on their behalf. Most are more than willing to get the extra exposure for their business.

Gathering leads so you can follow up after the show is one of the main objectives for most people. A great way to get these names is to hold a raffle. Have a gift basket or other gift on the table so people can see the prize. Have them fill out a ballot with their name, phone number and email. Let them know exactly when the draw will happen. This one strategy alone can get you hundreds of leads; you just have to make sure to follow up with them.

Be sure to have plenty of materials to hand out. Business cards are one of the most important, but colorful flyers and brochures are also effective. Consider giving out cloth bags with your company name and logo. People get bogged down with papers and flyers from other vendors, and they will appreciate having somewhere to put it all.

A mascot can add a fun element to your booth and get you lots of attention. Rent a costume and hire a friend for the day to dress up. They can wave to people as they pass by, take pictures with them and generally, be a good conversation starter.

In order for trade show booths to be truly effective, you need to plan in advance and spend some time on the design of how you want things to look. When done properly, they can be a great venue for acquiring new clients and customers. Follow up is the key here; you need to contact everyone you met at the show.
