What To Know About Transportation Logistics

By Ora Scott

The biggest headache, and cost, for most companies is getting the goods they need delivered in a timely manner, so they in turn can put them on their shelves and sell them to customers. Any breakdown or weakness in their transportation logistics system will eat into their profits and potentially make them lose customers to their competitors.

Companies invest a lot of time and money into having the most efficient and dependable supply chain possible. Each time the merchandise has to be physically moved, even if it is only a couple of feet, it costs the companies more money. It is important for them to look for waste of any kind, and eliminate it.

The goods can be shipped by land, sea or air. Most merchandise moved overseas is done by cargo vessels, because they can hold large quantities of products. Many companies also use trucking firms to move the merchandise to distribution warehouses because they can be scheduled with short notice.

Generally, a company will have all the goods it needs for its stores sent to one central location, a warehouse. The products are all stored there, until they are sent off to the individual retail outlets. Storing merchandise is another part of the supply chain that increases costs to the items.

The merchandise then has to be sorted and delivered to the stores where it will again be sorted, and put onto the shelves. The most common way to move goods the final leg of their trip is by large trucks. Most of these deliveries are done in a smaller area, so that one vehicle can service several retail outlets.

Companies are always looking for ways to make a profit, and by keeping close track of their transportation logistics they can get their merchandise delivered, without spending any extra money. Every additional step in the process will cost them, and their customers, more cash.
