Do You Know About These Usability Mistakes?

By Dung Hartgerink

Most people do not optimize for usability. This is also true for IMers that fail to optimize their conversions either. You have to optimize for both of these if you really want success online. Typically, smaller businesses are the ones that fail at this the most. You need to begin optimizing as soon as you can. This is very important. You can avoid the typical usability errors that most businesses make through optimizing. Now let's look at why optimizing for usability is so important for your business today.

One of the things you should avoid, especially in 2012, is the use of frames on your website. The use of frames will actually prevent the search bots from finding you, something you want to avoid especially if you want to be ranked. If you want to have people bookmark your site and share it with others, frames need to be avoided. Frames will also keep people from printing your page to get a physical copy. Frames also prevent visited links from changing colors which can be a complete nuisance. Obviously, using frames can really hurt website usability quite a bit. If your site contains frames, then it's best to just re-code your pages and it will never be a problem again.

Start avoiding tables in your site code because there are now too many problems as we'll explain. Smaller devices people have and use for surfing the web cause big issues when they bump into tables. If you want tables, then do it with CSS and you should move on to CSS anyway. Your site will be received in a more kindly manner by Google if you use CSS. If you're not familiar with CSS, then it's pretty easy to learn or you can outsource. Many more benefits to this other than what you just read, too.

Talk to your web designer, if you use one, and tell that person to avoid making images that display only text. This may not ever be an issue, but you need to avoid it just in case it ever may happen. Text-only images are accessible on PDAs of any kind and the result is pretty bad. The images will look pixelated and unclear, which is why you don't want to use them. So as you can see, if you are using font resizing on your website, the usability of these images is not very good. Your visitors will have a very negative impression of you because the text will not resize properly. This is not a big problem, but it is a problem which should be fixed to improve visitor usability.

Usability mistakes are a pretty big field of study that require effort to learn. The impact of your market also has a hand to play in this because they're the ones who judge. So you'll need to test as much as possible on your site. What you have to do is make changes that are specific to your own site and your own market.
