Should I Opt For Professional Photo Printing?

By Daniel B. Wiedeman

So what does "professional photo printing" really mean, anyway? We're not talking about giant stores, with their cavernous darkrooms spitting out photographs by the millions each day. Professional printing is printing done right: a thorough process undertaken by people who know and care about what they're doing. Professional photo prints could not be more unlike mass-produced prints. Choosing to go with a professional printing company is the best thing you can do for your favorite photos.

No stone is left unturned at a professional photo printing house. Imagine for a moment that you have just taken the finest photograph of your life. Whom would you rather pass it to? A retail employee with zero training and little to no experience? Or a bonafide professional who truly understands and loves what he/she is doing? We don't know about you - but we know which one we'd pick: the second one!

At professional photo printing houses, the end product, not the fee, is the key. These people will stop at nothing to give you the highest-quality photo printing service possible.

Quality standards are much better at professional photo printing houses. The photography paper used there is of a better grade; it's thicker, heavier, and more durable. Additionally, they'll give you a choice of a gloss, semi-gloss, or matte finish. These are great options to have if you're planning on displaying a large print; paper prints need to be protected by glass, and this combined with a gloss finish can create reflections from a distance. Matte paper doesn't present this problem.

There are other, more offbeat media also available at printing houses:

Metal photo prints - This trendy medium is weather-resistant, scratch-resistant, durable, easy to mount, and most importantly, beautiful. The majority of photo printing houses allow you to choose between a metallic coating and a matte one.

Leather photo prints - This unusual medium allows you to personalize just about anything. Make a wallet, a purse, or a jacket truly unique. You can also make a leather print to frame and hang on your wall - it has a texture like no other.

Canvas photo prints - Canvas is perfect for large prints; its matte texture and strong, fibrous consistency make for non-reflective, durable prints. Its fibers absorb pigment, making prints extremely durable and long-lasting. Additionally, the roughness of the fabric adds a special, "Old World" feel to your print.
