Five Excuses To Buy Tourmaline Jewellery

By John S Stewart

My Introduction

The name Tourmaline was, in fact, derived from the ancient word for "mixed". This is because all Tourmaline Jewellery, for example, Tourmaline Rings, Tourmaline Pendants and Tourmaline Earrings, is to be found in over 100 different colours. For this reason, some call it the "Chameleon Gemstone".

The Ancient Egyptian people thought that this gemstone had embarked on a mystical journey from the centre of the earth, and in doing so passed through a rainbow where it absorbed all its magnificent colours. They referred to it as the "Rainbow Crystal", and this title is also still used by some today.

It was originally brought over to Europe by the Dutch Traders from Sri Lanka in the 1600's.

Hundreds of years after the manufacture of some of the most prestigious of the Russian crown jewels that were originally thought to be designed using ruby, it was found that they are, in fact, holding those of tourmaline.

The Five Great Reasons

1. Colour Of Tourmaline

The tourmaline crystal is seen in many different colour hues, depending on the chemical content of the rock. Those rich in iron are brown, black or dark blue-black, while those with magnesium will be brown or yellow, and lithium rich examples will be yellow, green, lighter blues, red and pink. Some examples are found that are either multicoloured or bi-coloured, showing different colours from either ends or from inside to out. One such example is that of the "watermelon" tourmaline, that has colours that differ from within the stone, showing pinks and greens. Some examples show different colours from various directions and are said to be "dichroic".

2. Legend Of Tourmaline

This gemstone is famously said to suit all manner of moods and personalities. It is the gemstone of long lasting love and friendship. It is said to help artists, authors, actors, and all those others who are in experimental trades. It is also thought to protect against evil spirits while sleeping.

It was believed to be "The Philosophers Stone" by Alchemists, who thought it could help with the changing of base metals into that of gold!

3. Birthstone Tourmaline

Tourmaline jewellery is one type of jewellery that is used to celebrate those born in October.

4. Anniversary Stone

The gemstones used to celebrate any eighth anniversaries are found in tourmaline jewellery.

5. Tourmaline Zodiac Sign

From astrology, it is believed that the tourmaline is linked to that of the Star Sign of Libra.

To Conclude

Whatever the exact colour choice, your Tourmaline Rings, Tourmaline Pendants and Tourmaline Earrings, for example, all through history and right through to present day, in my belief have never looked better than when set next to diamonds, to produce stunning and beautiful examples of outstanding tourmaline jewellery.

You can choose your Tourmaline Jewellery because it is simply beautiful, or maybe because you think it may actually provide some sort of protection against nightmares, or even because it may change base metals into gold. But, whatever your real motivation, then just choose carefully the one for your mood, and it will be your most faithful of friends for the rest of your life.
