SEO Includes Link Building Tasks

By Angela Gines

SEO, or search optimization is the process of ranking websites and blogs high on search engine so that they are found when searchers enter relative search terms. SEO is not only limited to on page activities, or activities you physically execute on the website. Rather, SEO also involves off page initiatives. Back link building is one such initiative.

What is building links? Building links is the process by which a website gets back links to it from other sites and blogs so that its image and status is deemed higher by search engines. When other sites link back to your site, engines see this as an endorsement of your website's quality and thus they rank you higher on search engine results as well.

Link building is considered to be an off page marketing or SEO tactic because it does not involve touching your website or blog. Rather, it entails actions that rely on external websites and blogs to link in to your own website. There is no tangible impact to your website.

How do you build back links? There are two ways, internal links and external links. Internal links are links from one page of your website or blog to another page. External links are links coming from other or external websites and blogs into your own.

Which is more effective? Typically you want a blend of both, but you want more incoming links from external sites, outside sites, than incoming from internal web pages and blog posts.

Why? Because anyone can manipulate internal links from within a site. But when an outside site links to you, this is perceived as legitimate endorsement. So how to get external links? There are several ways.

Article submissions, blog posting, forum posts, guest articles, directories, bulletin boards, ads, social media links for example are all ways you can bring external links to your website. In doing so, you are gathering a broad set of incoming links that will only help your presence online over time.
