The job role of an SEO professional is very varied and often each day is completely different to the last. In order to be a success within the world of SEO you will need to be constantly researching your chosen keyword, site content and competitors. SEO can be very complex at times.

The most brief way of describing SEO would be to monitor and maintain the online presence of a particular site.

Successful candidates usually have a strong background in analytical thinking and good knowledge of online marketing tools. Search engine consultants are required to produce daily, weekly and monthly reports in order to benchmark the success of a campaign.

The essential functions of the job include; monitoring, tracking and reporting on search metrics. Providing support for the general marketing team, interacting with copywriters and presenting results.

Some SEO jobs are more in-depth than others. Often you will be required to produce backlink reports showing where the links into your site are coming from. You will need to look into keyword research, competitor analysis and keep up to date with the latest developments in the world of SEO.

The qualifications you will need to work in SEO are often negotiable. Lots of SEO workers have degrees in business or marketing although this is not essential. Having previously online marketing experience is a big positive and a direct marketing background will also be beneficial. It is important to be self-motivated and have a good eye for detail.

Excellent communication skills are essential for those working in SEO. You will need to be able to translate your results and objectives into layman's terms. Due to the Google algorhythm constantly shifting you will need to be up to date with all of the changes as they happen.

It is essential that you are advanced in computer packages such as excel if you wish to be successful In the field of SEO.
