Closing Gaps With Effective Law Firm Marketing

By Bernice Dixon

If you find that you have to turn down more clients than you want to, maybe you should reconsider adding more people to your workforce. Either that, or your law firm marketing just happens to be far better than you're able to keep up with. In either case, this article is not for you, and you can go pat yourself on the back.

All clients, regardless of their experience or the number of years they've been in business, are always on the lookout for more clients. I've worked with many such firms. When it's not working as it should, marketing could take out so much from you. But whether you want to or not, it is one of those things you have to handle if you want to have clients.

On the other hand, once you begin to understand and become successful at it, marketing can be both fun and exciting. It will both be very helpful in making your business even more successful and open the doors wide to any opportunities that may come.

Here are a few things you can do to turn what used to be boring and cumbersome marketing actually fun and easy:

Encourage active participation. This is not particularly applicable if you are the only person in your firm, but it's incredibly applicable if you have partners and/or associates. Teamwork is required in marketing. It's a collective effort and responsibility, as the rewards will likewise be collective. This group philosophy towards marketing should not be any different in the case of a teamwork-driven law firm.

The Marketing Medium you choose should be one that interest you. Maybe you aren't too comfortable having to personally approach potential clients at events. If you are one of them, maybe you should choose another marketing medium, say, TV advertising or law firm SEO. There are a lot of marketing mediums that you can use so widen your horizons and find that one that is most ideal for your law firm.

Market a Little Every Day. You have to realize that the longer you get around to starting your marketing strategies, the harder you will find it to actually do it. Let it stew for a while and you will run the risk of going on a frantic and mad scramble to get new clients when there is a pressing need to have them. Start today, even if you're not yet at the point where your law firm is about to go under.

Train yourself to like Meeting People. For some of you this is more difficult than for others, but many lawyers once liked meeting and interacting with other people, and in my practice, I've found that most lawyers can learn to like doing so again. You're not expected to get it right the first time, but give yourself some time to practice and you'll see the results will start coming in after a while.

Lawyers do not really expect just how much marketing will impact their legal career, or even how much involvement they would need to have in the process. The competition out there is tough, however, and clients need to have a reason to choose you. If you learn to enjoy your marketing and take an active role in it, then potential clients will see that, and they'll be that much more likely to hire you when they need legal services. Marketing is more a means to an end than the end itself; therefore, pick your way slowly but surely.
