Check the Rules
It's vital that you read the guidelines of discussion boards. Forums are online communities and a lot of communities have guidelines and generally the rules permits certain things and disallow other activities. If you want to get booted from a forum just blunder in there and start posting away. This is a sure fire way to get some damaging reputation.
Clear Intent
Have a very clear intention. Why will you be signing up for the online community? For many people it is to hang around with an easy minded group. For us as internet marketers we see it as a traffic prospect so if you're strategic, if you are planning to post links or to develop your customer list, you've got to get a strategy.
Below are a few strategy ideas from James Schramko
A real identity will give you much more authority and trust in the forums.
So when I use my real name online I've always been very careful what I post under my name but it's super interesting. People can see your identity, they recognize you. I have been part of community forums from 2005 and you can see here a couple of discussion boards that I've joined up with in 2006, 2007 and 2008. So when you accumulate all the posts, I'm guessing I've published probably about 15,000 posts in different forums during the last several years. It will be an understatement to say I've produced a 100,000 from that and I will explain to you why.
Make sure you work with an interesting image.
In discussion boards folks keep seeing your image every time you do an article so you want to put an image that helps people identify you and get to know you because it's much like the Gravatars we included on weblogs and your FB, all those same issues come into effect on community forums.
