Who works at an internet marketing company?

By David S Walker

Web marketing is quite a new industry and it has evolved quickly. As the nature of the internet changes, so do the marketing tactics. In just the last few years, the average web marketing firm will have altered significantly. So what are they like right now?

In years gone by, internet marketing revolved around influencing the search engines via simple changes to a website's HTML. Simply by altering the meta data and the text on the page, you could see drastic improvements. All that was needed was a programmer and these people still constitute a large percentage of most web marketing companies' staffs.

The search engines eventually reacted to on-page tactics and in a bid to improve the quality of their results pages they took inbound links as being a key indicator. Web marketing companies now employ various link experts whose job it is to ensure that a client's website has a decent number of high quality links pointing towards it.

You will also find employees at a web marketing firm working in pay-per-click advertising. These people are responsible for placing the ads you often see in a list of search results. This is a specialist role these days and looking after a campaign is about monitoring it and reacting to make it both effective and efficient.

The web was once littered with poorly-written keyword-heavy language, but that is slowly changing. Web marketing firms also need writers. The growth in multi language SEO also means many firms have writers for different languages. These days it is important to have high quality writing, not just for the search engines, but also for the effect it has on customers.

Social media marketing demands an entirely different approach. It is not about programming, but about conveying ideas and getting people interested in and talking about firms and their products. The rise in social media has now given rise to another aspect of web marketing.
