Imagine yourself - unshaven, clad in a bathrobe, perhaps smoking a ciggie and drinking a cup of Joe, your Breakfast of Champions as you huddle up for a virtual meeting online. Since the go-go days of the dotcom boom, the ideal of starting an online business has drawn many to try their business legs in the challenges of online commerce. And they continue to inveigle Americans in so many ways, or at least have the opportunity to, as US Census figures show close to sixty percent of households "wired in" and close to a third of these households having bought something online at least once. Online seems to be all about the Benjamins, but who's rakin' 'em in and who's still stuck at the bottom of the food chain?
It may sound like a simplistic, child-like idea, but there are still many people who have this strange connotation regarding "making money online" - so I would, like, turn my computer on, then the money rolls right in, am I right? - they often ask. However, one must always remember that the Internet and all its associated features and commercial tools, are newfangled entrepreneurial tools that should be used congruously to more old-fashioned tools in the business shed. Let us assume you're working on a home improvement project, feeling all Tim Taylor as you espy what appears to be some sort of futuristic something-or-other - it works well for you, but soon enough you realize that all you needed after all was that orange ball peen hammer. And so it is with online business, and supplementing all that high-tech with old-fashioned business, or in many cases, supplementing old-fashioned business with some high-tech, is what it takes to be successful. True success online is not defined with "out with the old, in with the new", but by a seamless combination of both.
There really are very few exceptions to the following rule in which the usual company that can "make money online" and back up its claim is more than just a virtual retail store, but rather a multi-faceted company where the Internet is just one of its mediums. People these days are more techno-savvy than ever before, yet they do not look at the Internet as their be-all and end-all - it may sometimes be their primary option, but often isn't the only one. Truth be told, the Internet's main purpose is as a medium of research - consumers would look up different products they can buy, but cash will actually be exchanged at the brick-and-mortar retail shop.
In short, a virtual business does not have to be one that exists only in the bounds of cyberspace.
If you may notice, successful online businesses are those that have made use of extensive offline promotion in addition to their online campaigns, those who made use of television commercials and newspaper ads as well as the usual email advertising and clickthrough strategies. Yahoo! is an excellent example of a fabulously successful online company-but what do we remember most when we think of Yahoo!? Natch, it has to be that darned yodel from the television ads - even now I can still hear it in my sleep.
Let's face it, online business can be a lucrative endeavor if you put your mind to it, but you should always remember not to get caught up in the rapture of...online business. So we implore you, real nicely, to finish up your coffee, put out your cigarette (because we might get cancer from the passive smoke), complement your coffee with some solid food for breakfast, heed nature's call, get dressed, and go out there and meet potential clients - those online doohickeys and doodads can only do so much for you!
