Plumbing And Its Related Concepts

By Chloe Gib

Plumbing refers to a system of pipes that are installed in a building for distribution of clean water and removal of sewage. The person who carries out the installation and repair of such a system is known as a plumber. Plumbing is considerably part of infrastructure; hence it is an essential component when determining development in a country.

The materials used to make pipes and tubes keep varying with time. For instance, stone, clay, wood, bamboo and lead were used in the ancient times, while plastics, copper, brass and other nontoxic materials. Lead was abolished as one of the raw materials for such equipment since its toxic.

The main sections of plumbing systems are fittings and the straight sections. The straight line sections refer to tubes and pipes. Varying techniques are used to form straight sections, with tubes being formed by extrusion while pipes are formed via welding and casting methods. These parts may be joined using proficiencies such as brazing, crimping, compression fitting and solvent welding.

Pipe fittings are the parts that are used to join other parts. These include valves, tees, unions and elbows. Apart from the parts that form the system, there is other equipment that is installed along the system and that either utilizes or performs some work on water. These are known as fixtures. Examples include kitchen sinks, showers, bathtubs, urinals, toilets, air washers, fountains and humidifiers.

Plumbing installations consist of some equipment which is concealed from direct view. Many of these gadgets perform technical roles. They include expansion tanks, pumps, filters, meters, sterilization utilities, heaters, softeners and control mechanisms. Upgrade and maintenance equipment, including hydraulic pumps that operate at high pressure and hydro jets, are also concealed.

The health, safety and health of the general public are subject to the plumbing systems installed where they work and reside. The government, therefore, has a keen interest in ensuring that up-to-standard systems are installed in all buildings. It achieves this by exercising either direct or indirect control on issuing licenses to contractors.
