The Search For The Incredible Facebook Breathalyzer

By Flora Vinson

Social media is always looking for bright programmers to join their ranks, and the biggest operator Facebook is no different. To prove their worth, programmers have been challenged to come up with a solution to an odd problem. The problem that they have to find the solution too is commonly called the Facebook breathalyzer challenge.

Apparently there is a strange phenomenon that causes intoxicated people to decide that posting messages whilst in that state is a good idea. By all accounts this is a problem that has plagued users since it started. This has replaced the daft o'clock rambling telephone messages that were commonplace in the 80s.

So in a bid to save people's relationships, and in some cases their jobs, a solution is being sought. Whatever you thought was a witty posting while drunk, could return to haunt you when you have sobered up. So there is a definite need for something, apart from willpower, that will prevent inappropriate messages being sent.

For them to assign individuals to monitor everyone's posts would be highly impractical. They have looked at the way that people write, as it tends to degenerate the more that an individual has had to drink. Unfortunately so many people use a shorthanded version of text talk. So what looks like a meaningless jumble of letters might be the normal way that they communicate.

Programmers are now looking towards math problems and puzzles, failure to solve the required questions could result in the user being blocked from certain sites or applications. The logic being that a drunken person is unlikely to solve these puzzles, but a sober person will not have a problem. If these puzzles could be embedded as a portion of the log in actions, that might help solve the problem.

To date you can obtain other self evaluation programs. These will inform you about your level of intoxication. You would still have to choose to act on that information. Consequently programmers around the world are seeking to come up with the facebook breathalyzer.
