Christmas Crackers are no joke!

By Michael Fielding

While Christmas is the holiday that pulls in the most crackers pulled, a favourite tradition, people also use crackers for other occasions. There are football crackers- designed in the colours of your favourite team. Or you can even have their logos printed on them! They're even filled with official merchandise gifts and sometimes a trivia question to see just how much you know about your favourite players.

Most companies go through thousands of jokes and print only about 80 a year and change half of these every other year. The most important factor is simplicity. The idea is that the jokes have to be understood and be acceptable to people of all ages, including very young children. They're also usually sent out far and wide, to places like Australia and New Zealand for Christmas, so the jokes can't be topical or have any distinguishing cultural references that may not be understood or be found amusing in different country.

A simple way to make it more colourful and inclusive is to use wedding crackers. Wedding crackers now come manufactured in such a way that they are customizable. You can choose what kind of gift you want to add in it: a small candle, pieces of chocolate, flowers or whatever you like. They can also be made to order with colour combinations and decorations of your choice.

Prefer diamante in blue over flowers? Lace and not ribbons? Want a particular pattern or something more simple? Not an issue, as most online shops for wedding crackers give you an inexhaustible list of options to choose from.

Another creative tip with wedding crackers to really personalise them is printing the names on your guest list. This makes them double as name tags and make for a nice addition to the table. You can even add a personal message inside them for an extra little surprise.

Crackers come in other themes as well. Feel like a Disney party? Well, you can throw one with matching Disney crackers, whether it's Disney princesses or Winnie the Pooh or any other Disney character.

Here's a personal favourite Christmas cracker joke: "What do you call an author with a locomotive? Train Austen."

What's yours?
