Basic Information On Nursing Scrubs

By John Taylor

Scrubs, also known as Theatre Blues in the United Kingdom, are trousers and shirts or gowns. Personnel who work in health facilities typically wear them. Named after the process of scrubbing in before surgery, there are both surgeon and nursing scrubs.

The clothes are designed to be simple and minimal. There are few places for dirt to collect and overall, they are easy to clean. In the event they are permanently stained or damaged, they are inexpensive to replace.

In many hospitals, it is now very common for individuals to wear these clothes outside of surgery. Originally this attire was worn as replacement of street clothes when they became soiled or contaminated. Now, many hospital personnel, even those who work in clean areas, opt for this clothing. This may be because of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. The spread of this condition as increased the usage of these clothes, under the false belief that they cannot be contaminated like other clothing.

For many years, nurses were required to wear uniforms during operation, but surgeons were not. Prior to uniform enforcement, surgeons wore their street clothes and a small apron while operating with no protection over the hands and non-sterile supplies. Cleanliness is now a top priority during these practices.

The 1970s marked the decade in which these clothes became what they are today: a short-sleeved, v-neck shirt with drawstring pants, or a calf-length, short-sleeved gown or dress. Often times these are constructed from a blend of polyester and cotton fabric. The standard color is green, however, these are made in different patterns and colors, especially for wear outside of operating rooms.

Typically surgical and nursing scrubs are used in the United States. In most other countries, personnel are assigned to uniforms of a tunic and trousers, or a dress. These garments are designed to be simple, easy to clean and maintain, and inexpensive to purchase. Once solely worn in surgery rooms, these uniforms have become the attire worn in various health environments.
