Expressing Your Thoughts Through A Blog

By Ian Tate

A writer who writes and maintains a blog is a blogger and the journal that he makes available on the web is a blog. Most blogs are like personal diaries with material appearing in a chronological order. Also, people can make their own comments to your blog entries, as you reserve the right to approve them, disapprove them, or reply to them when approved. Truly, blogging has become a very popular means of communication with its own terms of the trade.

Blogs have been around for over 15 years, starting out as simple online diaries, but now including news and opinion blogs as well. Still, we often wonder - are blogs destined to be observation posts for you to express your thoughts, or are they valid forms of journalism?

A blog can be categorized as something that falls between radio and TV talk shows and traditional reporting. Just as SMS made clear inroads into evolution of language, blogging is set to revolutionize journalism. You can say blogging is the First Amendment and then some. Blog writers allow their inner voice to speak in the same way that the writers of the Revolutionary times did, calling things how they see them. And there are no editors to make changes or any political parties to censor what's stated on a blog.

Blogging has caught the imagination of the young and old and established writers, lawyers, techies, and other professionals are using the avenue to "spread their thoughts and words." Blogging is on the fast track and has established a place in "opinion journalism." It is seen by many to be a form of self declared independence.

You can upload your writings via .pdf file or use your blog site's blogging software - in any case, people will be flocking to your site to read it in no time. Gone are the days when you had to knock on the doors of editors and publishers to get your work published. If your blog takes off, who knows - millions can be viewing your site per day.

Some mainstream journalists don't think much of blogging, due to the potential for inaccurate information and one-sided opinions. Yet blogs contain skeptical analysis, critical commentary, and alternative perspectives that are rarely exposed by mainstream journalism. A lot of war victims and soldiers have their own blogs who give people a first-hand view of the horrors they experience. Sometimes, bloggers will even post their references to prove they aren't making the whole thing up. There can also be times when breaking news would first be read on a blog site. And many bloggers have established for themselves a great standing in their field.

Blogging according to lawmakers needs to address closely aspects of trust, credibility, integrity, transparency, and ethics. A lot of bloggers blog for the very reason to spread the gospel of truth, correct wrong information when it needs to be corrected, note questionable sources, and tell nothing but the truth to their readers. After all, abuse of freedom isn't the right way to enjoy it.

Blogging has become a widely-used platform for anyone who wants to share an opinion, and remains on the cutting edge of journalism. You can let freedom ring with your thoughts and words on the Internet.
