Being Ethical About Your Marketing

By Paul Henderson

As in any sort of on-line marketing venture, there are rules and guidelines to abide by and you must be aware of the dangers, particularly when you are mass promoting. One of the most important dangers of targeted email marketing is spam mail.

It is crucial that you don't include any person on your mail list (even pals, family, co-workers and so on.) without their authorization. Make people work to sign up for your newsletter by requiring them to e-mail a certain address with a "subscribe" instruction, or by providing a newsletter sign-up box on your internet site for them to add their address to your list. Records are also extremely important; keep a backup with full contact information (phone, fax, e-mail and snail-mail) for your ISP and website hosting company. Always keep a copy of all of your outgoing e-mail, particularly the newsletter itself.

Authorization Marketing is an approach to selling products and services in which the recipient agrees in advance, or chooses to receive your advertisements, newsletters, or other marketing information. Anyone with an email address is afflicted with information overload, automated telemarketing, and spam, that most people welcome the concept of authorization promoting. Online marketing pioneer, Seth Godin states, "Permission promoting turns strangers into friends and friends into faithful customers. It's not only about entertainment it's about education." As long as there is the Internet, spamming will always exist. It's economically workable to spammers because they have no operating costs outside the management of their mailing lists, and it is tough to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. As it is very unlikely to observe each uninvited e-mail sent to every email, spammers are numerous , and the volume of uncalled for mail has become exceedingly high.

But for those who send out uncalled-for advertisements that truly get reported and caught, the penalty is just as high. If you're labeled a spammer, many harmful implications can happen to you, whether permanent or temporary. Worst-case scenario, your ISP (Internet service provider) will deny you access to your account waiting on an enquiry; your web hosting company may shut down your internet site; and finally, you will be blacklisted.

Authorization Promoting is not just ethical promoting, it also shows respect for your own business, industry and most of all, your valued buyer.
