Handy Hints For Design Templates For PowerPoint

By Beatrice Harlowe

A lack of variety in templates for PowerPoint can often lead to a staleness in presentations from even the most dedicated of professionals. This can be particularly true of practitioners such as teachers, who face a similar audience almost every day of their working lives. Knowing how to design some new templates is therefore a useful thing to know about.

The first step in the process to create a new presentation is to click on View, Master and then Slide Master. Then open the Slide Master, before choosing Format and then Slide Design; this should open the Slide Design task pane, allowing a user to choose colour schemes. Then choose to Edit Color Schemes via the button near the bottom of the task panel, pick out the desired colours, then click Apply.

By using the Format and Background tabs, new backgrounds can be added to the design. The Fill Effects tab means that effects like pictures or gradients can be added to the template, and graphics can also be added for every slide. This is where logos can be used for the repeating graphics, as can AutoShapes, though the latter will need to be formatted correctly.

Fonts can be changed to suit the design by using the Format button, and then clicking on the Replace Fonts instruction. Text can be aligned and laid out in different ways using other instructions on the Format toolbar. Features such as indents for text can be changed using the Ruler, which should be visible on screen.

If the ruler is not visible, View should be clicked on, then Ruler. It is possible to re-size placeholders by using the grips which appear then they are selected using the mouse; users simply drag the grips into the required dimensions. Clicking View, then Headers and Footers, allows the designer to create an footers that the slide master might require.

Some users may also want to create a Title Master. This can be done by clicking on the Insert tab, then by clicking on New Title Master. The same formatting tools as detailed above can also be applied to the Title Master, and once it has been completed the slide master can exited by clicking on View, then Normal.

The new design can be saved as normal by clicking on Save As and choosing the appropriate options on the menu. To use the newly designed templates for PowerPoint in a presentation, it is necessary to click on Format again, this time clicking Slide Design afterwards. Browse the designs, before choosing one and putting it into use by clicking Apply.
