Dark Shadow Cast Over the Midnight Premiere of The Dark Knight Rises

By David Dischler

Twelve people are dead and 58 are hurt after a shooting rampage in Aurora, Colorado at the midnight premiere of the new movie The Dark Knight Rises. The suspect in the shooting, who reputedly worked alone, has been caught and remains in custody.

Many movie theaters across the nation held midnight premieres of the new Batman flick, The Dark Knight Rises, the second to 2008's The Dark Knight, on Thursday night/early Friday morning. In avid support for the flick, many moviegoers wore costumes. The suspect in the shooting, included. He had reputedly dyed his hair red and told authorities he was The Joker, a long-time fixture in the Batman comic series and infamously portrayed by the late Heath Ledger in the 2008 The Dark Knight.

James E. Holmes apparently turned up at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado decked out in head-to-toe gear that witnesses believed was simply a costume. It turns out it was protective tactical gear, including a ballistic helmet and gear that protected his legs, throat and groin, gloves, and a gas mask that covered his whole face. He purchased a flick ticket for the theater in which the shooting occurred. He entered the theater with the remainder of the moviegoers, but at some specific point, left his seat and left the theater thru a back exit door. He returned thru that very same exit tossing a canister into the theater before he proceeded to shoot. He then presumably fired a shot at the ceiling and then started shooting victims at random as he walked up the stairs of the theater. Anyone that attempted to get up and exit the theater, he shot.

Now authorities face the frightening proposition of searching Holmes ' studio. The loft is purportedly booby-trapped with varied incendiary and chemical devices and trip wires. As of Friday evening, Holmes ' building and 5 surrounding apartment buildings had been abandoned. But authorities had delayed any efforts to enter Holmes ' loft until Saturday so as to bring in resources from the federal government.

Bullets from an AR-15 rifle, a 12-guage shotgun and 1 of 2 .40-caliber handguns were recovered at the flick theater. The guns were purchased legally at 1 or 2 different retail locations in the Aurora locale. More than 6,000 rounds of ammo alongside much of Holmes ' protecting gear, were purchased on the web. The canister he threw into the theater allegedly contained tear gas, but the exact nature of the gas still has to be precisely identified.

10 victims died at the flick theater, while two others died from their injuries upon arriving at the hospital. Of those wounded, just about everyone was shot, though a few were wounded during the chaos which ensued. Of the 58 hurt, 30 remain hospitalised, 11 of who are in bad way. One of the hurt was a 4-month-old baby, who has since then been treated and released.

Holmes surrendered without resistance within 7 minutes of the first calls received from moviegoers reporting the shooting. Holmes is scheduled to appear in an Arapahoe County, Colorado courtroom Monday morning for prosecution; however , the court file has been sealed by court order. Holmes is being held in the Arapahoe Local lock up. Holmes previous criminal record consists only of traffic summons.

Aurora is a Denver suburb found only 13 miles from Littleton, Colorado, where the April 1999 Columbine School slaughter occurred.
