Did Penguin and Panda updates wiped out article marketing?

By Jasons Rozentsweig

Frequent updates of search engine algorithms often puzzle SEO beginners. The two most recent updates of Panda and Penguin have reshuffled the top performers in the most popular niches.

Your article writing is still believed to be the most cost efficient way of online promotion. Unlike no-follow back links on pages that no one ever visits, articles allow placing your keywords in context.

Many SEO experts agree that search algorithms treat contextual backlinks in a more favorable way because they are placed in a context. For example, if article talks about cooking but links to a local auto mechanic it will be captured and destroyed by the algorithm.

Similarly, social back links may be not as useful even after Facebook publicly traded date. What will be the contribution of a few hundred of re-tweets sent from non-existing customers?

The big question becomes how to arrange your article promotion efforts in the best way? There is a clear tradeoff between uniqueness of content and its usefulness.

On the one hand, the article should be readable and provide useful information. From this perspective, one should write a well thought passage and have it proof-read by a professional editor for style. In this way the marketer will not spam the Internet but provide readers with important and potentially useful content.

But the problem with such an ideal article, even if submitted to hundreds of article directories, will typically be considered only once by search engines. This is a common problem with search algorithms that punish severely for duplicate content.

Search engines care only about original content which often leads to abuse. Independent marketers on a tight budget would have no chances in the battle with Wikipedia that it closely guarded to provide only rich and successful corporations with link juice.

This forces many independent marketers to employ various spinner techniques and tools that replicate the same article in multiple copies. This strategy of unique content generation will help with a lot of back link power but often turns the article into trash.

The worst case is a synonym replacement that can replace "Intel stock" with "Intel warehouse" and make the article unreadable. Article spinners will typically not do a good job with your article.

A more meaningful way is to write different modifications of each paragraph and spin them randomly in each submission. This will preserve the logic of exposition and the flow of thoughts. Importantly enough, this article distribution strategy will not be punished by reduced rankings.
