PopUps Friend or Enemy?

By Andrew Parker

You need to look something up so you type your issue into Yahoo and google. You then pick out one of many results that Google provides and click on it. Then, once the page finishes loading, big surprise! Instead of finding the page that is designed to have the content you need, you are forced to handle a pop up. This is an ad that refuses to be closed no matter how hard you try--until you enter your e-mail address into it. Eventually you are so upset that you just close down your web browser altogether. That site owner's maneuvers haven't gotten the best of you!

There is a good reason that many people detest pop ups. They are generally bothersome. They intrude on the internet use. The ones that play audio might end up getting you in trouble with your boss (or someone else in the room). They make unrealistic claims. If you would like to close them you will have to give up your personal information. Some even put malware and cookies inside your computer systems. There are certainly not very many people who really like encountering pop-ups and yet most IMers continue to use them. Why is this?

The depressing truth is that IMers continue using pop up ads because they actually work. They receive attention. They help marketers make e-mail marketing lists. It is proven consistantly that a pop up ad will generate more opt ins than an opt in box placed in a sidebar or in the body of a web page. They sometimes even result in direct sales. Sadly, these foolish pests truly get the job done a lot of the time so, unless someone can make a better tool to use, most Web marketers are probably going to keep using them.

Obviously, however it doesn't signify that the Internet Marketers should continue using them. What kind of value will there be to an e-mail address that is exclusively given under duress? Usually what goes on is that the particular person just chooses to immediately opt out of your list as soon as they get the first e-mail from you. How good can your traffic seriously be if nearly all of your visitors click out because they are offended by the pop up? Sure you need to generate profits, but is this truly the best way? Couldn't there be a different option available to those who want to build an e-mail list and sell things?

The authentic truth is this: if you have a fantastic product and you can present it in a good light, you won't really need to use a pop up. Concentrate first on creating a high quality product so that you won't have to make use of an annoying pop up to get the job done for you. Write a persuasive sales page or splash page. Grab the reader's attention then do not give it back using just the power behind your copy and site content. The simple fact is that an online Marketer will only find success and profit online if he or she creates something that someone else finds valuable. No pop-up ad could be substituted to disguise the lack of value in a product.
