Search engine optimization and how it works

By Mukesh Kumar

SEO is a common enough term for internet entrepreneurs. Nonetheless, not many people are aware of what it is or what it constitutes. So here's a quick look at search engine optimization and how it works for your business.

SEO (search engine optimization) is a process through which a website is optimized to gain a high page rank on popular search engines such as Yahoo and Google. If your website has been consistently ignored by major search engines, you can use tried and tested SEO techniques to get them to take notice. A higher page rank will help you get noticed by the right people and also, open up more sales opportunities.

SEO is a powerful communications tool that helps online businesses to reach out to potential clients. Search engines work by delivering results that pertain to a given keyword or key phrase. In other words, if a user has typed in terms that relate to content to your website; your site will be featured on the SERP - making it easier for people to find you. A high page rank will not only list you in the results page but also make you more visible than other featured rival sites with a lesser ranking.

Most major online companies and conglomerates understand the importance of a high page ranking and inevitably use it to gain the attention of the world. Nonetheless, SEO isn't for exclusive use by large and established companies. Smaller or fresh ventures stand to gain a lot from the same as well. It can help you expand business and also, appeal to clients- old and new.

Your website may be listed in Search Engine Results Page or SERP without using SEO. However, it's unlikely for your site to be featured in the top 10 results for any given key term or phrase. In fact, studies have proven that internet users rarely look beyond the top 10 results to find what they're looking for. Therefore, it's more prudent to use SEO to get a better page rank in order to get featured in the top results.

However, SEO cannot be expected to get you the number one rank each time someone searches for related content. It can optimize your website to get a higher page rank though; thereby, increasing your chances of getting noticed by internet users. Once your website is performing to its maximum potential, it will become easier for you to gain and retain customers.

It is also important to know how search engines work to understand why SEO is considered so very important. 'Spider' or 'Robot' software is used by the engines to find and gather information. The 'spiders' collect the information by going through the HTML codes for more convenience and accuracy. Once collected, the data is deposited into the main central database or search engine index.

The information is then organized by the search engine index; and the content that is deemed most relevant to the user's keyword or key phrase, is then displayed on the SERP. SEO helps make your content as relevant as possible to any given terms or phrases that pertain to the data on your site. This can guarantee a better page rank. However, search engines keep changing their methods of collection information and therefore, SEO techniques must be applied regularly to keep up with all the shifts.

Naturally, SEO practices focus on optimizing HTML codes to increase chances of getting noticed by the spiders. However, there are many other techniques used to make a website more SEO friendly. These techniques are usually employed according to website size, content, competition, purpose and requirements.

So if you want to make your presence felt on the internet, employ SEO techniques to help your website win over the search engines as well as consumers.
