Search Engine Optimization For The Ordinary Programmer

By Jeff Santoro

Once when someone completes a website or finished posting a website or page into the web, they expect that plenty of hits and sit around waiting for it. Once things do not seem to go as planned and there are very few visitors, a cursory study soon shows that the page does not rank high in search engines and can be near or at the bottom of the list. Therefore one needs to do search engine optimization.

Plenty of engine optimization professionals are out there to make searches hit your site. Some offer their services at very expensive rates. However, with a few hours research and trial and error, one can actually do this on their own.

In optimizing your webpage on your own first you must begin with content keywords. Use plenty of keywords that you feel people search for regarding your niche and use it wherever possible. Even though your site already has meta tags, this is not a guarantee that you will be ranked high in the search engines list. Keywords, pun aside, are the key.

Second try to create a sitemap to help search engines. A text based sitemap helps a search engine index all of your web pages throughout the site including the main page. Once indexed, your site is easily retrieved and put into search results immediately. Site mapping is important so that a search engine is able to follow a link that has been requested from the search engine or otherwise.

Next the use of flash and flash animation should be lessened as much as possible. Flash is great for making a good looking site but it does use embedded text. This embedded text cannot be read by search engines and therefore even though the embedded text is keyword rich it cannot help you gain rankings.

Try also to get inbound links into your site. These are one of the best things to do to really generate traffic when and where it is needed. One of the way to do this is to affiliate yourself with other high quality websites that can pass traffic to your end. This along with the use of quality articles posted within your site and within forums and blogs that provide back links are the key to increased traffic and increased engine ranking for you and your website.
