Blues Brothers' First Law of Marketing

By James Hooper

The Blues Brothers was a cult hit movie from the last century. I find that inspiration for marketing can come from many different sources - and old movies and music is a great place to start. Our preferred source of entertainment is now on video sites like Youtube.

When you think about it - the fact that we go to a searchable online database rather than TV or our CD collection is one insight already.

After some aimless clicking we ended listening to the great music from the Blues Brothers - and some marketing rules were born.

Blues Brothers Marketing Rule Number One - if the audience (market) does not like the first thing you test. stop and consider just what they do want. And then test it and pay attention to the response. The market will tell you what it wants if you listen and pay attention. [link:Blue Brothers]

Now just enjoy the video, and think about your marketing and how your market is responding to your "music".

Are you playing the tunes your market wants? What do they really want you to do for them?

The first law of marketing is about the "WHO". Until you define your market - it is impossible to design a campaign that will reach them effectively.

Marketing does not always need to be bland and boring. Look for your marketing ideas in places other than texts and newspapers. Look in the movies, the music - and find some emotion that will shine in message. Same is lame.
